The Clear Seas Project is an initiative set up and run by Sussex Inshore Fisheries & Conservation Authority (Sussex IFCA), the Environment Agency along with partners Southern Water, Sussex Wildlife Trust, Chichester Harbour Conservancy and The Living Coast.
The aim of the project is to educate boat users and visitors of marinas and harbours in the area of simple steps they can take to reduce their footprint on the local marine environment in a friendly and approachable way.
The scope of work included the creation of the logo and visual identity for the project, along with fully illustrated leaflets and posters for 8 designated areas. These areas included: Chichester harbour, Littlehampton harbour, Shoreham harbour, Brighton marina, Newhaven harbour, Sovereign harbour, Hastings seafront and Rye harbour.
The logo and identity took cues from Sussex IFCAs own identity, in the form of the colours and wave shapes. Inspired by this, the monogram depicts a wave in the form of a ‘C’, supported by a rounded typeface. This approach harmoniously matched the tone of the project.
Early on we agreed an illustrative approach for the posters and leaflets was the best way forward. This gave us the opportunity to localise each of the illustrations and match them to their marine environment. The bit-sized copy made it easy to swap out imagery for each design.
The project to date has been a success, having had lots of positive feedback in these areas, along with increased awareness, particularly with boat users.
